Clinical Herbalist,

Integrative Health Educator

Menstrual, Sexual & Hormonal Health
for women & other folks who menstruate
(non-binary & trans folks welcome, too)

I'm here to help you connect to the wisdom of your womb with support from the plants and the magic already inside you.

Hello my beautiful friend,

I'm Kay'aleya (she/her), a clinical herbalist and integrative health educator devoted to equipping you with the holistic tools and strategies you need to take your menstrual, sexual and hormonal health into your own hands
(or work integratively with a healthcare practitioner, if that's more your style)

With a Masters of Science degree in Therapeutic Herbalism and 15 years of experience in holistic health with a history as a local community herbalist, massage therapist, doula, student midwife, and yoga teacher, it's my mission to weave the wisdom I've gathered into actionable and accessible offerings for holistically-minded folks like you though my podcast, in-depth one-on-one consultations and forthcoming online courses.

After many years of living in the western US, I'm currently settling my roots into the Wabanaki lands of midcoast Maine with my creative and skilled partner and our sweet pup, Kuma. When I'm not working, you might find me practicing yoga, preserving veggies or fruits, making hand-dipped beeswax candles, or in the garden or the forest singing to the seeds or listening to the wind.

Herbal medicine is our ancestral heritage.

As someone who grew up in the NYC area completely disconnected from the earth, I'd be lying if I said I always knew this.

But once I found out that wild plants living around us can keep us healthy, my whole perspective on healthcare transformed.

It was like I had tapped into something that just made sense, plant medicine was people's medicine, and always has been.

There were people still practicing these ways of healing all over the world, including here in the US. And it really hadn't been that long since herbal medicine was at the center of medical care. The wholesale discarding of herbalism as a thing-of-the-past was, you guessed it, largely influenced by the promise of pharmaceuticals coming on the scene in the early to mid 20th century.

But... herbal medicine is still a safe and effective modality that can be used independently of, or integrated with, conventional medical care.

How had I been oblivious to this before?

The more I studied and tried out what I was learning, the more I trusted the plants.

Our bodies communicate with us.

Learning to listen to my body has been profoundly transformational.

For the past 15 years, alongside herbalism, I've studied massage therapy, bodywork, yoga, midwifery and Ayurvedawhich all taught me to learn to read my own body's messages and those of my client's bodies from a wide range of therapeutic lenses.

I learned how to tell when bodies were out of balance, even subtly, and take simple steps to bring myself and others back into balance.

I became fascinated with physiology and how symptoms from one body system could be giving us clues to what might be happening elsewhere in the body, mind or spirit and how truly individualized optimal health is for each person.

And I also had the unfortunate personal experience of a mysterious chronic post-viral illness myself, which impacted all systems of my body at first but has had lingering impact on my heart. This health journey expanded my compassion a thousandfold for how vulnerable it can feel when the conventional medical system, and even highly skilled alternative health practitioners, are unable to offer what we really need in order to become well again.

In the end, no one knows our bodies like we do.

Our menstrual cycles (and really, all of our gynecologic symptoms) are a sign of our overall health.

In midwifery school, we learned about cultivating fertility naturally, and one part of that was reading a book that outlined the practice of fertility awareness (it was Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler). I can honestly say this book changed my life.

For 14 years now, I've been tracking my cycles month after month, year after year. Fertility awareness has been my sole form of contraception (why weren't we taught this in school??) AND a monthly window into my hormonal balance, stress levels, and overall health.

Our cycles (whether or not we are currently cycling, have irregular cycles, experience PMS or cramping, see mid-cycle bleeding, feel sore breasts or other symptoms) can tell us SO MUCH about our bodies.

And the plants can help us regain balance, restore vitality and feel empowered to take our health into our own hands, naturally.

One of the most interesting things I learned in graduate school was about the concept of co-evolution. Our bodies have literally evolved over the centuries alongside plants, which means that many of our cells have co-evolved with the help of plants.

In other words, we would not be who we are without plants, and our bodies are evolutionarily primed to respond to herbs.

Nerdiness aside, combining the traditional knowledge sourced from hundreds of years of herbal practice with the advancements of modern scientific research allows us to work safely with herbs as effective allies that nudge our bodies in the direction of optimal health.

Unlike conventional medicine, which often focuses on one area of the body and commonly targets particular receptors to achieve a desired result, herbal medicine is a much more whole being approach.

A focus on nutrition and a wide range of lifestyle habits, in addition to finding supportive herbal formulas which is kind of like matchmaking between people and plants, is all a part of the practice of herbalism.

There's a big difference between picking up a catch-all "hormone balancing" formula at your local food co-op or Whole Foods and actually learning how to read the signs of your body in order to specifically craft a formula for your unique whole being needs.

Philosophy of healing

My deepest belief is that nature heals. Just look outside and watch the earth regenerate after a fire or a clear-cut. Think about how our skin or bones heal after being broken. Life begets life. Nature is always seeking more life, and adjusts or re-arranges itself to make way for that vital energy to emerge.

We are nature. Our bodies are not separate from nature, so when we are on a health journey of any kind, our bodies have the capacity to heal. An imbalance may be present, acutely or chronically, but the body's capacity to regenerate is always there.

Herbal medicine, nutrition, mindfulness practices, movement, breath work, massage or bodywork, spiritual or energetic practice, or other therapeutic modalities are essentially nudging our bodies to respond differently, to shift the current pattern from dysfunctional to functional again. And ideally find their way into dynamic restoration of total wellness. This process can sometimes be quick, but is often a healing journey that involves multiple systems (even if it seems like just a menstrual issue) and can take weeks, months or even years to accomplish.

In some folks, a chronic, debilitating challenge or illness may be present, and while even the best therapies may not be able to completely resolve the issue, the healing force of nature is always present. We can always encourage a more optimal state of wellness individualized to each person.

And health is multi-layered. True integrative health includes wellness not limited to the interconnected ecosystem of our physical bodies, but our emotional bodies, our mental bodies, and our connection to something greater beyond us (which you could call spirit/nature/universe/divine/God). Healing can take many forms and can happen on any layer of our beings.

Optimal integrative health specific to each person is the goal. And nature is ultimately always the healer.

Herbal Therapeutic Approach

As an integrative herbalist, I bring together my in-depth knowledge of "western" herbal materia medica (which truly combines European, Middle Eastern, North American and African lineages) with my background in Ayurveda and some basic training in Traditional Chinese Medicine.  I incorporate traditional wisdom from each lineage into my love of scientific research, physiology, phytochemistry, herbal safety, and evidence-informed practice. Energetics and constitution are a part of how I view each person and plant. And I also bring some experience with more subtle relationships with plants that I've cultivated over time.

Overall, my herbal approach is what I call 'embodied herbalism,' coming from a place of relationship with the plants beyond books and theories and instead really exploring the many ways of working with people and plants. While Petri dishes can sometimes tell us fascinating things about how a plant constituent impacts a cell, our embodied experience is what really matters.

Commitment to Inclusivity

As an imperfect human, I commit to doing my best to be inclusive of anyone who would benefit from my offerings.

My intention is to make the spaces I create safe for anyone on the gender spectrum who's interested in my work, to use gender neutral language where I can, and to continue to learn how I can support non-binary or trans folks who menstruate in addition to cis women who are drawn to my work.

I also intend to create a safe and accessible space space for folks of all sexual orientations, cultural backgrounds, financial situations, physical abilities, and black, indigenous or person of color backgrounds.

I don't claim to be an expert, but as someone who deeply cares about social justice (and who has personally experienced extreme financial instability, a range of sexual orientation and debilitating physical dis-ability at times in my life), I can say I'm committed to continuing to learn to be the best ally I can be.

Indebted to my teachers

Over the past 15 years, I've had the great honor and privilege to sit at the feet of and work alongside many skilled and wise teachers. I would not be who I am without them. The depth of my gratitude is immense.

Most influential herbal & nutrition teachers: Aviva Romm, MD; Sajah Popham; Camille Freeman; Bevin Clare; David Winston; Candis Cantin; Jillian Bar-av; Dr. Jessica Drummond; Juliet Blankespoor; Tony(a) Lemos; Larken Bunce; Rosemary Gladstar (and so, so many more)

Most influential midwifery/womb-centered teachers: Whapio; Institute of Holistic Midwifery; Elizabeth Davis, CPM; Michelle L'esperance, CPM; my own body and the bodies of my clients

Influential natural therapies trainings: Natural Therapeutics Specialist and Massage Therapist certification at New Mexico School of Natural Therapeutics; Ayurveda Health Educator and Ayurveda Bodywork certification at California College of Ayurveda; Ayurveda for Women's Health with Terra Rafael

Most influential earth and spirit teachers: Rowen White; Acharya Shunya; Joe Hollis; Brooke Sullivan; Jillian Twisla; Daniel Foor; Asia Suler; the good folks at Sandhill Farm and in Auroville; and beyond measure, the plants and the earth themselves

Special honor to the indigenous peoples, historical slaves and many unnamed cultures whose teachings are often unacknowledged but inextricably woven into all that I've learned and practiced over these years.
